Formation of Complex Intermetallics in the Al-Rich Part of Al-Pt-Ru Academic Article uri icon

  • The study confirmed the stability of the previously reported ternary C-phase (Pm ̄ 3 P m 3¯, a= 0.77353 (3) nm for Al 73.5 Pt 10 Ru 16.5), whose composition was found to range between Al 73 Pt 6 Ru 21 and Al 73.5 Pt 14.5 Ru 12. The thermodynamically stable decagonal phase was revealed for the first time at 700-900° C in a small compositional region around Al 78 Pt 6 Ru 16. It belongs to the D 4 structural type (1.65 nm periodicity in the specific direction). The metastable Al-Pt χ-phase (P 31 c) is stabilized by the addition of only~ 1.5 at.% Ru and extends up to~ 12 at.% Ru. The lattice parameters for Al 76 Pt 18.6 Ru 5.4 are a= 1.2256 (4) and c= 2.7331 (4) nm.
