The transmission electron microscopy (TEM) image in Figure 3 b clearly shows that the gold nanowire is essentially composed of individual Au NPs transferred from the water surface. The TEM result in Figure 3 b also points to the occurrence of discontinuities within the nanowire due to the alkyl layer surrounding the Au NPs.
