  • Recent studim have established the presence of HTLV-I in the Middle East. The entire nudeotide sequence of HTLV-I~ from a prevlomdy described imlate of a Mulmdi lcardan patient was detemdned. To further characterize the LTR and env genes from the HTLV-I isolate we employed the PCR amplification with subsequent doning and Jequmdng of the mpllfled products on both strands. Sequence anal3ms of LTR regiom showed marked madeoflde homology of 98% compared to Japane~ Isolates, while African and lndo-Malay isolates showed more dlvergmee with sequence homology of 95% and 91%. Higher homology of 98-99~ was conserved in the mpllfled HTLV-mv~ ene.
