  • A treatment is presented of a problem in which an incident shock wave propagates from left to right inside a shock tube having the same cross-section. The plate, which is free to move along the tube, is supported by a rubber rod that has smaller cross-section and is free to expand in both the y and z directions. The acceleration of the plate triggers two waves, one of compression and the other of rarefaction. Attention is given to whether the compression waves will converge into a shock wave along the rubber rod.
