- This study aims to characterize the macro- and microstructure of AlSi10Mg cup-shaped components produced by additive manufacturing–selective laser melting. Samples from different orientations were characterized by optical and electron microscopy. Images of 2D sections were combined and visualized in 3D, to display a full metallographic image from all orthogonal reference planes, representing the material’s unit of volume. Both the structure anisotropy and inherent defects of the selective laser melting process are discussed, with emphasis on geometric variation within the cup. The findings allowed achieving a better understanding regarding possible locations of increased defect density and may lead to improvement in building strategy knowledge.
