Introduction In this talk I concentrate on the role of the superstring dilaton in deter- mining cosmological evolution in the early universe and some particle physics properties at energies well below the Planck scale. The idea is that even with- out solving the full problem of non-perturbative dynamics in string theory some general conclusions can still be drawn. The unique role of the dilaton in this context has been recognized previously by many authors (See eg [1] and references therein).
