  • Rationale: It is unclear whether non-exercise activity ther- mogenesis (NEAT) from spontaneous activities is associated with resting energy expenditure (REE) and abdominal fat sub- depots. Methods: We evaluated 270 participants with abdominal obesity [waist circumference (WC)=107cm, 32 women]using gold-standard techniques to define NEAT, REE and abdominal fat distribution. Each participant was assessed by accelerom- eter for six days to measure all performed movements. We defined NEAT as 1 3 metabolic equivalents (METs) and non- spontaneous activity (NSA) as 4 9 METs. We used indirect calorimetry to assess fasting REE and performed MRI imaging to assess abdominal fat distribution at L5-L4.
