  • Abstract 76 psychiatric outpatients reporting traumatic events in the previous 2 yrs completed the Impact of Event Scale (MJ Horowitz et al, 1979), an instrument measuring intrusion and avoidance of images and stimuli eliciting memories of a traumatic event. 18% of the Ss exhibited symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Their intrusion scores were higher than and their avoidance scores nearly as high as those of the combat-stressed Israeli soldiers described by Z. Solomon and M. Mikulincer (1988). Compared with a diagnostic group of 443 patients at the same clinic, the trauma group was more symptomatic in the range of affective disorders than in schizophrenic or psychotic disorders.(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
