  • Materials and methods. The Clinical Microbiology Laboratory of the Soroka Medical Center is the only facility providing diagnostic bacteriology services to the Negev region of southern Israel, including community and hospital outpatient clinics, inpatient wards and emergency rooms. Middle ear fluid from pediatric patients with acute otitis media presenting to the Emergency Department of the Soroka Medical Center was collected by tympanocentesis or from recent (< 5 days) spontaneous eardrum perforation on cotton swabs. Swabs were sent to the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory of the Soroka Medical Center on modified Stewart medium (Medical Wire & Equipment, UK) and arrived within 12 h.
