  • MATERIALS AND METHODS The Soroka University Medical Center (SUMC) is the only general hospital providing full health services to the entire population of the southern region of Israel, the Negev. It serves a pediatric population (younger than 14 years of age) of 262,000 individuals. 4 All cultures are sent to one central laboratory, the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory at the SUMC. In addition to providing service to hospitalized patients the hospital provides full laboratory facilities to primary care clinics in the community.
