IMPA1 knockout mice survive on inositol deficiency diet Academic Article uri icon

abstract

  • Lithium salts have been the standard pharmacological treatment for bipolar disorder for over 50 years (Goodwin & Jamison, 1990). The phosphatidylinositol (PI) cycle is a key intracellular second messenger system in brain as well as in numerous other tissues (Berridge & Irvine, 1989). The dephosphorylation of inositol-1-phosphate to inositol is accomplished by the enzyme inositol monophosphatase (IMPase) encoded in humans by two genes (IMPA1 & IMPA2). IMPA1 is the brain-abundent enzyme (Ohnishi et al., 2007).
