  • The classical Stefan formulation of the phase—change heat transfer is reexamined. Thermodynamically consistent interface boundary conditions, that account for various pressure—transition temperature effects, and for departure from equili—brium at the phase— change front are pre—sented. Several tractable planar solidi—cation problems, exibiting within the Stefan setup singularities of the inter—face velocity and acceleration, are dis— cussed. We explicitely demonstrate that these defects of the classical Stefan so—lutions are regularized in the continuum models with modified boundary conditions at the phase— change front.
