  • Various aspects of formation of large-scale circulations and other types of coherent structures in a turbulent convection at large Rayleigh numbers have been discussed in a number of studies for the atmospheric flows [1, 2, 3, 4], laboratory experiments in the Rayleigh-Bénard apparatus [5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29] and direct numerical simulations [30, 31, 32, 33]. A mean-field theory [4, 34, 35] has been proposed for the explanation of formation of coherent structures in turbulent convection. Effect of large-scale coherent structures on global properties of turbulent convection have been recently studied in laboratory experiments in [36].
