abstract

  • Designing orally administered colonic delivery systems is complicated because the colon, located at the end of the alimentary canal, is difficult to access. Nevertheless, if drugs could be specifically targeted to the colon, it would be possible to treat disorders in the colon, such as inflammatory bowel diseases, locally, thereby reducing systemic absorption and avoiding painful treatments (enemas). It would also increase the efficiency of drugs, such as steroids, that can be absorbed in the large intestine, permitting a reduction in the required dose."
