Non-relativistic and relativistic plasmas: similarities and differences Conference Paper uri icon


  • Abstract Non-relativistic shocks and reconnection in the heliosphere can be studied with in situ measurements. Their relativistic counterparts are observed only due to the electromagnetic emission from charged particles, which are energized in these systems. It is not clear to what extent the relativistic phenomena are similar to the non-relativistic one, if at all. The present status of theory and simulations of relativistic shocks and reconnection will be reviewed and compared to our knowledge of the non-relativistic systems.
