  • ABSTRACT Thermodynamic analysis of the Mg-Al-O system at 1000K confirm that Mg vapor provides extremely low oxygen partial pressure, which is enough for the decomposition of the alumina layer covering the surface of molten aluminum. The contact angle of Al on the boron carbide substrate measured under Mg vapor is sufficient for free infiltration of the ceramic preforms.
