  • The following is the transcript of a roundtable discussion that was held at the New York City office of Human Rights Watch on Friday, 17 September 1999. The impetus for the discussion was the publication, in the Fall 1999 (volume 12, number 3) issue of RM, of an essay by Neve Gordon, Jacinda Swanson, and Joseph Buttigieg entitled,“Is the Struggle for Human Rights a Struggle for Emancipation?” We originally sent the article—which involved a critical appraisal of the human rights movement by focusing on a series of reports compiled and published by Human Rights Watch to Reed Brody, the advocacy director of Human Rights Watch, in order to create a dialogue between the Marxist academic community and the human rights movement.
