abstract

  • When did galaxies start forming stars? What is the role of distant galaxies in galaxy formation models and epoch of reionization? Recent observations indicate at least two critical puzzles in these studies. First galaxies might have started forming stars earlier than previously thought (< 400Myr after the Big Bang). Furthermore, it is still unclear what is their star formation history and whether these galaxies can reionize the Universe. Accurate knowledge of stellar masses, ages, and star formation rates at this epoch requires measuring both rest-frame UV and optical light, which only Spitzer and HST can probe at z> 7-11 for a large enough sample of typical galaxies.
