The growth of single crystals of optical materials via the gradient solidification method Academic Article uri icon

abstract

  • Abstract The gradient solidification method (GSM) was applied to the growth of large, high quality single crystals of sapphire and calcium fluoride. The correlation of several growth parameters (i.e., thermal gradients, stability of the thermal field, growth rates and the quality of the starting materials) to the quality of the grown crystals was investigated. Several types of growth defects were analysed and their nature elucidated. The crystals were characterized via their crystalline and optical properties.
