  • METHODS Fabrication of Matrices. The technique for fabrication of ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer matrices embedded with small magnets was modified from methods reported earlier4. Bovine serum albumin (BSA, Sigma Chemical Co., St. Louis, MO, MW 68,800) was sieved to particle sizes between 180 and 250 ц using standard USA testing sieves (ASTME specifications, Dual Manufacturing Co., Chicago, IL). Ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer (EVAc, 40% vinyl acetate) manufactured under the product name ELVAX-40P, was washed in distilled water and 95% alcohol to remove impurities5, and then dissolved in methylene chloride to form a 10% wt/vol solution. The powdered BSA was added to the EVAc solution and the protein-polymer mixture (33% BSA by weight) vortexed for 15 sees.
