  • Biomineralization of a calcareous hydrocoral was studied in the presence of aluminum metallic substrate. The encrustation and skeletal growth rate increased indicating a carbonate crystalline phase transition in the interface between the substrate and the encrustation layer. Scanning electron microscopy showed skeletal formation on the cracked metastable passivation layer of aluminum. A low active corossion potential resulted in molecular hydrogen evolution and high pH on the substrate.
