  • Background independent risk factor for myocardial infarction, stroke and sudden death in adults. Circulating Nuclear Factor κ B (NFkB) related cytokines (TNF alpha) and biomarkers like c reactive protein, are elevated in serum of pediatric and adult OSA patients and decrease following therapy (CPAP in adults or tonsillectomy in children). Although systemic inflammation is correlated to the severity of cardiac function in OSA pediatric patients, the pathways leading to such morbidity is yet unknown. NFκB is a transcription factor and a major regulator of inflammation and immune processes, which we have previously reported as highly expressed in germinal centers of tonsils in children with OSA.
