  • Abstract A kinetic theory is developed for ion-acoustic solitons and electron holes in a current-carrying collisionless plasma. Electron and ion concentrations near an electron hole are calculated; criteria for the existence of a solution are derived. For the case of a cold-ion plasma, a determination is made of the parameter range where a solution exists. In particular, it is shown that the existence of ion acoustic solitons becomes impossible for a sufficiently high current.
